Regent William Gates named to Board for UW Medical Center

UW Regent William H. Gates has been appointed to the UWMC Board.

Gates, a Seattle attorney, was appointed to the UW Board of Regents in December.

Gates, who received a B.S. from the UW in 1949 and an L.L.B. from the UW Law School in 1950, was with the firm of Preston Gates & Ellis from 1964 to 1997.

He serves on the board of directors of the Mutual of America Capital Management Corporation, the Seattle Symphony Foundation and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Association. He is director of the William H. Gates Foundation.

Gates has been a leader in a variety of civic groups such as the Boy Scouts of America, United Way of King County and the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce.

He received the UW Law School Distinguished Alumnus award in 1991 and the Washington State Bar Award of Merit in 1992. He is a former president of the Washington State Bar Association.

He is married to Mimi Gardner Gates, Illsley Ball Nordstrom director of the Seattle Art Museum.

He and his late wife, Mary Gates, who also served on the UW Board of Regents and the UWMC Board, have three children: Kristi, Bill and Libby. ¶
