Where under utilization exists, the University is committed to taking affirmative action in employment for American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Asians/Pacific Islanders, Blacks, Hispanics, women, and persons age 40 and over. It is also committed to employ and advance in employment qualified persons with disabilities, qualified disabled veterans, and Vietnam era veterans in all levels of employment.
Additional information concerning equal opportunity and affirmative action policies and procedures, including complaint procedures, are in the Operations Manual.
Training
Classes on equal opportunity, nondiscrimination, affirmative action, prevention of sexual harassment, and disability accommodation are offered free to the University community. Employees may get information on scheduled classes by contacting the Equal Opportunity Office at 543-1830, eoo@u.washington.edu., or Box 354560. Departments, hiring officials, and search committees may arrange for special training sessions by contacting the Equal Opportunity Office.
Family Education Rights & Privacy Act
Instructors are reminded that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 requires that the University treat student records in a confidential manner. Student records include examinations and papers submitted by students. Faculty who plan on distributing grades, papers, and exams through departmental mailboxes or in hallways or plan to post grades on a WEB site must first have the permission of their students or be prepared to distribute such papers in ways that safeguard the students' personal information.
Payroll Savings Plan
Now is the best time to enroll in the University's Payroll Savings Plan. This plan enables employees to purchase U.S. Savings Bonds through payroll deduction. For example, a $100 bond, which costs $50, may be purchased with the minimum deduction of $12.50 per pay period. Additional information and an application form was distributed to each employee through campus mail on April 29.

Campus Mail Pickup
The U. S. Postal Service has notified Mailing Services of a citywide schedule change for their pickup of out-going mail. For operational necessity, this means Mailing Services will adjust the late shift by one half-hour. Effective immediately, Mailing Services will close to the public at 6:30 p.m. Please send e-mail to mailserv@u.washington.edu or call 543-8757 if you have any questions regarding this change.

1998-99 Permit/U-PASS Distribution
Renewal of annual parking permits and U-PASS stickers purchased through payroll deduction began this week. When you receive your renewal form, check the data carefully, make any necessary corrections or modifications, and mail the form to Parking Services, Box 351105. Please act promptly; the deadline is May 8. Remember, all campus parking violations must be satisfactorily settled before a parking permit can be issued or renewed.
If you purchase a U-PASS in order to participate in a carpool, you must complete two forms, a U-PASS renewal form sent via campus mail and a carpool renewal form. Your primary driver is sent the carpool permit renewal forms for all members of the carpool and is responsible for distributing the forms to the carpool members. Renewal forms from all carpool members should be bundled together and returned in one packet by the May 8 deadline.
Drop your renewal materials in the nearest campus mailbox to Box 351105 or bring them to Parking Services main office at 3901 University Way N.E.
