Dr. Mary Lampe, associate professor of laboratory medicine and of medicine, has been named director of the Department of Laboratory Medicine's Medical Technology Program. This professional program trains students to perform assays, interpret results, and evaluate, analyze and solve problems in clinical and research laboratory settings. Students learn to employ scientific methods in evaluating the health status of a patient. Their results are used in diagnosis, monitoring and prognosis of disease. The program leads to a bachelor's degree in medical technology. Herself a 1968 graduate of the Medical Technology Program, Lampe is also an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Microbiology. She conducts research in methods for controlling the pathogenic bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, the most common cause of blindness in the world and the most common sexually transmitted disease in developed countries. Lampe received a master's degree in microbiology from the UW in 1976 and a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1984.
