REWIND: KUOW public radio has received a $210,000 Radio Program Fund Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for Rewind, its weekly satirical news program. The grant will be used to broadcast the program nationally and increase it from 30 minutes to an hour. The brainchild of morning host and reporter Bill Radke, Rewind features a news monologue, comedy sketch, poetry, music, people-on-the-street interviews and a listener question to the Seattle Public Library's Quick Information researcher, Helen Gutierrez. Its centerpiece is a conversation about current events carried on by a group of notables in the Public Radio Café. Radke says he plans to continue the show's Seattle flavor when it goes national, saying his goal is to translate Seattle to listeners around the country, the way Seinfeld does with New York and Garrison Keillor does with Minnesota. KUOW airs Rewind at 10 a.m. Saturdays, with a repeat broadcast at 2 p.m. Sundays. CASE NATIONAL AWARD: UW, Tacoma was recognized recently by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education with a Circle of Excellence Gold award in the special events category for its September 1997 grand-opening gala and community celebration. The grand opening included a dinner attended by more than 600 patrons and guests and a community celebration that drew about 1,000 people. Leighanne Harris, director of academic services and interim director of student affairs, chaired the event. ¶ University Week The faculty and staff publication of the University of Washington uweek@u.washington.edu April 30 1998
