Talk about team spirit . . . Astronomy Professor Emeritus George Wallerstein (seen here swinging the bat) has been playing softball on his departmental team since 1971, when the team was founded by colleague Woody Sullivan. This year it's a combined team of atmospheric sciences and astronomy going by the name Totally Unstable. Says Wallerstein, “We do not practice. Some are so good that they do not need practice. Others are so bad that practice will do them no good. All are too busy to practice.” He says he plays “the position that will do the least harm in the field.” Why does he keep going after 27 years? “The game takes total concentration so I forget all my other problems except hitting the ball, running, etc. As Yogi Berra once said: 'Fifty percent of the time this game is ninety percent psychological.'” So, of course Wallerstein is still psyched up.

The Green Team's plan shows development of west campus with mixed use closer to 15th Avenue Northeast and University Avenue Northeast and housing farther west. They placed the transit station north of Northeast Pacific Street under 15th with entrances near the Henry Gallery and the Physics/Astronomy Building. The team is one of four from the UW Department of Architecture and the College of Architecture and Urban Planning that considered ways of incorporating a proposed subway station into the campus plan at the annual spring charrette. The charrette was co-sponsored by the Rapid Transit Authority and the University, and is part of the University's service mission to assist in dealing with community issues.

An aerial perspective by the Yellow Team shows Brooklyn Avenue Northeast as a street primarily for housing, while University Avenue Northeast is mixed use with a west campus “hub,” a new 24-hour computing center, classrooms and housing. The team is one of four from the UW Department of Architecture and the College of Architecture and Urban Planning that considered ways of incorporating a proposed subway station into the campus plan at the annual spring charrette. The charrette was co-sponsored by the Rapid Transit Authority and the Univeristy and is part of the University's service mission to assist in dealing with community issues.
