A WASTE-FULL AWARD: A model system for dealing with radioactive wastes earned some UW chemical engineering students third prize in an international environmental design contest recently. The team proposed incinerating the waste using a plasma arc torch—an ultra-high temperature incineration that would convert the remains into molten glass. The glass could then be poured into molds for long-term storage. Advising the team was Chemical Engineering Professor Larry Ricker. The students got $2,000 and a trophy for their efforts.

ENGINEERING HONORS: Two teaching assistants, a longtime staff member and a professor in the College of Engineering were honored recently with the Dean's Recognition Awards for outstanding service. TAs Kamal Ahmed of the Department of Civil Engineering and Teodora Rutar Shuman of Mechanical Engineering were cited for their teaching excellence in the classroom as well as their devotion to students outside the classroom. Chris Cunnington, a 15-year veteran of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, received the staff award. Currently serving as an administrator, Cunnington is credited with inspiring a cooperative and responsive atmosphere in helping to guide the department as it has grown in size and stature during her tenure. Professor of Mechanical Engineering Dale Calkins won the faculty award. An innovative leader in design education, Calkins has played a vital role in developing the Society of Automotive Engineers Formula Car project and the Integrated Learning Factory to give students a bridge between engineering science and practice.
