Campus parking will be a premium on Commencement Day, June 13

With almost 5,000 graduates and more than 25,000 guests expected at the UW Commencement ceremony June 13, parking on campus and traffic around campus will be congested, despite efforts to mitigate traffic impacts.

For the first time in a decade, commencement on the Seattle campus will be combined into one ceremony and moved to Husky Stadium. For the last 10 years commencement was divided into a morning and an afternoon ceremony in the Hec Ed Pavilion, but student participation and guest attendance has outgrown the facility.

Parking on campus on Commencement Day will be by permit only—regular faculty or staff permit or special Commencement parking permit. Commencement participants and guests must park only in the parking area indicated on the face of their permit.

Carpooling will be essential. Participants are also encouraged to take a taxi or Metro bus. Private boat moorage applications can be requested by calling the University Relations receptionist at 543-2560. There is a $25 moorage permit fee. Shuttles to and from Husky stadium will run continuously from noon to 2 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. from the West Campus Garage and from the North Campus parking lots.

University Relations also has coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard regarding Montlake Bridge, and with the UW and Seattle police departments for assistance with after-ceremony traffic routes. No parking will be allowed on the east side of 25th Avenue Northeast to Northeast 75th Street to allow more rapid traffic egress.

Signs will be posted directing drivers to the nearest freeway access.

Commencement is being moved to Husky Stadium this year to accommodate increased student interest in participating in the ceremony, increased graduation rates and enrollments. The ceremony is expected to last approximately three hours, but will be shortened to approximately one hour if it rains seriously. ¶
