MARINE WINNERS: Marine Studies Professor Marc Hershman has been given the Puget Sound Maritime Achievement Award by the Marine Directory and the Seattle Maritime Week Committee. Hershman is the founder of Waterfront Awareness, a nonprofit organization dedicated to public education and promotion of waterfront education projects, and has overseen the establishment of a maritime interpretive center, set to open this summer. Professor Emeritus of International Studies George Taylor has been given the Puget Sound Ancient Mariner Award by the same groups, recognizing his longtime advocacy of international trade in Washington State. COACHING WINNERS: A group of five gifted Latino high school students from Texas is on its way to Washington, D.C. for the national history day competition with a little help from American Ethnic Studies Professor Erasmo Gamboa. The students, who attend Nimitz High School in Houston, were researching the World War II bracero program for a local history fair competition, when they discovered Gamboas book, Mexican Labor and World War II: Braceros in the Pacific Northwest. The book became one of the resources the students used to put together the winning entry in the district competition. From there, the students went on to win the regional and then Texas history fairs. In preparation for the national competition, which begins June 13, Gamboa was interviewed by the students, sent them photographs used in his book, agreed to review their project and also urged them to visit with and offered to help set up a meeting with the Mexican ambassador in Washington. He also provided the students with the names of former braceros living in the Northwest for interviews. I was struck by the depth of their understanding, objectivity and balance, research and determination to understand history, said Gamboa. They located me through the Internet and conducted research at Rice University and the University of Houston. This is very impressive and uncommon for high school students. But then they are not ordinary students. MARKET OPENS: Once again the University District Farmers Market will be operating at the corner of University Way and NE 50th St. for the summer.
