FireFighter Statue
Physical Plant metal shop welder Francisco Delgado does the final welding on Seattle’s memorial to its fallen firefighters. The memorial, designed and built by UW sculpture students, was dedicated earlier this month after the Seattle Fire Festival Parade. The piece is located on the north side of Main on Occidental. The dedication included speeches by Mayor Paul Schell, Fire Chief James Sewell and realtor Don Kennedy, one of the initiators of the project. Names of the Seattle firefighters who have died in the line of duty during the last hundred years (about 34), were read, after which a fire bell was rung. The bronze memorial was designed by UW graduate Hai Ying Wu and built by sculpture students under the direction of Art Professor Norman Taylor.

Three hundred ninety six students received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UW Bothell, which held its ceremony at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion. UW Tacoma awarded 444 bachelor’s and master’s degrees in ceremonies at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse in Tacoma. Jim Lehrer, executive editor and anchor of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS was the principal commencement speaker for UW Seattle. Kelso Gillenwater, retired publisher of The News Tribune in Tacoma spoke at the UW Tacoma ceremony.
