European diabetes group holds course here next week

They’re coming to Seattle from Israel, from Finland, from Poland and from Korea. Next week, 30 participants from 14 different nations will be at the UW Health Sciences Center for an intensive course on the latest in diabetes research. The course is sponsored by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and has been organized by UW Professor Ake Lernmark, head of the Robert H. Williams Laboratory in the School of Medicine.

Faculty who will teach sessions are top experts drawn from the UW and other diabetes research programs in the region.

The course, known as the EASD Scientist Training Course, is designed to give participants, many from clinical backgrounds, a broad knowledge of cutting-edge research to understand diabetes and how it might be prevented. In addition to lectures, there will be several laboratory sessions during the week and opportunities for participants to work together on projects.

“It’s a great honor for the University of Washington and the diabetes researchers in Seattle to have this training course held here,” Lernmark said. “We’re looking forward to a very stimulating week.”

Although laboratory sessions are limited to course participants, lectures will be open to UW faculty and students. For a schedule, contact the R.H. Williams Laboratory office at 543-5316. ¶
