Medical school names assistant dean for curriculum
Dr. Susan G. Marshall, UW associate professor of pediatrics, has been named assistant dean for curriculum at the School of Medicine. Pending UW Board of Regents approval, the appointment is effective Sept. 1. Marshall has been an attending physician in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Childrens Regional Hospital and Medical Center since 1985 and was associate director of the Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Center from 1994 to 1996. She is co-director of the UW medical schools pediatric clerkships, pediatric resident advisor and a career counselor for junior and senior medical students. Marshalls research interest has been improving clinical care for patients with cystic fibrosis. In her new position, she hopes to study ways to improve teaching and learning for both faculty and students. Her initial priorities include gaining a clear understanding of how the current medical curriculum is working for students and faculty at the medical schools teaching sites in the five-state region of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho the WWAMI states. I look forward to the challenges of participating in the comprehensive curriculum review proposed by Dr. Paul Ramsey [UW vice president of medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine] and enhancing the schools already outstanding educational experience for our students, said Marshall. Faculty members and medical students participated in the decision to offer Marshall the position. She was chosen out of an extremely talented and qualified field of finalists, said Dr. D. Daniel Hunt, associate dean for academic affairs. Marshall began at the UW in 1981 with an internship in pediatrics at Childrens Hospital, followed by a residency and fellowship. She joined the medical school faculty in 1985 as a clinical instructor. Marshall received a bachelor of science degree in 1976 from University of California, Los Angeles, School of Public Health and an M.D. in 1980 from UCLA School of Medicine. ¶ University Week The faculty and staff publication of the University of Washington uweek@u.washington.edu August 20, 1998
