Veterans of the American Lincoln Brigade
Veterans of the American Lincoln Brigade and Friends in Washington were on campus last week to honor the Americans who volunteered to fight fascism on the battlefields of Spain as part of the International Brigades between 1936 and 1939. They dedicated the first monument in the United States to American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War. The privately financed monument consists of a sculpted bronze plaque on a block of granite. It is located west of the HUB, and honors the 11 UW students, 3,000 Americans and 40,000 international volunteers. The plaque was executed by sculptor David Ryan of Oakland, Calif.

UW participated in Sound Shake
In September, the UW participated in Sound Shake '98, a region-wide exercise to test preparations for responding to a major disaster. Representatives from campus units that will play a key role in an emergency staffed the campus Emergency Operations Center and responded to simulated situations such as people trapped in collapsed buildings, reporters clamoring for information, and faculty members trying to rescue valuable equipment from potentially hazardous locations. The UW tries to test its emergency preparedness at least once every two years, so that many individuals are able to participate in the experience and also to improve response systems. Participants included from left, back row: Stephanie Steppe, director of health sciences academic services and facilities; Jerri McCray, assistant vice president for facilities services; B.J. Livingston, secretary senior, physical services; Barbara McPhee, administrator with Environmental Health and Safety; Gene Woodard, director for custodial services with Physical Plant Custodial Services; Diana Carter, director for transportation services in Facilities Services. Middle row: Jim Shilt, facility engineering manager for Facilities Services; Paul Siscel, building services coordinator for Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities; Bob Ennes, office supervisor for Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities. Front Row: Lynne Siverson, assistant director, Housing and Food Services; Anne Scholl Fiedler, acting director, Center for Career Services; and Megan Davis, assistant director, Student Financial Aid.

Visiting advisers
Visiting advisers had the opportunity to learn about a number of University programs in a "sampler room" which was part of the annual UW/community college advising conference held here last week.
