Flu shots available for $10 charge

The Campus Health Service is offering flu shots for faculty, staff and students this year, but there have been some changes in the program. Except for employees in certain units, such as UW Medical Center, a flu shot will cost $10. In past years, the UW has paid the cost for vaccinating some health sciences employees who came to the clinics.

"This was becoming a very expensive program," said Benita Sharp, immunization coordinator for Campus Health Services, noting that nearly 7,000 people received flu shots last year. "We simply aren't able to provide this service for everyone without a charge."

Some units have chosen to absorb the cost of the shots, Sharp said. UW Medical Center will pay the charge for all of its employees and volunteers. The School of Nursing and some departments in the School of Dentistry are also paying for faculty and staff vaccination. Employees who are not sure should check with supervisors to find out if the cost will be covered.

Shots will be given at several locations over the next three weeks. At UW Medical Center, shots will be given:

  • from 9 a.m. to noon in room BB-124 on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 26 and 27;
  • from 10 a. m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in Plaza Cafe B, and
  • from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in CC-408.

    Other times are set for the week of Nov. 2 and a full schedule is available in room NN-256 of the medical center or by calling 548-4848.

    At Hall Health Primary Care Center on campus, shots will be given:

  • from 2 to 4 p.m.Tuesday and Wednesday,
    Oct. 27 and 28, and
  • from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5. Special clinics will be set up at other locations.

    Sharp had some tips for those seeking shots:

  • Bring the $10 fee in cash or check
  • Wear a top that allows easy exposure of your upper arm near the shoulder
  • If you have a latex allergy, call 548-4848 to make special arrangements for your shot. ¶
