FLOATING AWAY: Staff at Harborview Medical Center were treated to root beer floats this week, courtesy of the Harborview administration, who wanted to say thank you for a lot of hard work. "I have never before witnessed the teamwork and commitment that our staff demonstrated during an incredibly busy summer," said Steve Orcutt, associate administrator. "This commitment to our mission and our community sets Harborview apart from other medical centers." POLICE AWARD: Sophomore David M. Choi received the first Police Honor Citation from the University Police for his actions in helping to capture a thief. Choi chased a man who had stolen his backpack, tackled him in front of Schmitz Hall and held onto himdespite being punched and kickeduntil police officers arrived. Afterwards, the police identified more than $1,500 of stolen merchandise in the culprit's possession. The Police Honor Citation is given to a private citizen who performs an act of valor involving serious risk of personal injury or death to himself. KUDOS: Director of Custodial Services Gene Woodard has been elected President Elect of the International Executive Housekeepers Association. He will automatically move into the presidency . . . Music Professors Stuart Dempster and Richard Karpen received awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for their catalog of original compositions as well as for recent performances . . . Zoology Professor Lynn Riddiford received the G.J. Mendel Honorary Medal for Merit in the Biological Sciences, the highest distinction of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic . . . Political Science Professor Lance Bennett has won the Ithiel de Sola Pool Award given by the American Political Science Association for outstanding career achievement . . .
