UW oceanographers Deborah Kelley, left, and John Delaney examine the interior of one of the four sulfide chimneysalso known as black smokersthat were retrieved from the seafloor off the coast of Washington and British Columbia last summer during an expedition supported in part by the UWs Office of Research and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Scientists sliced the structures apart in order to learn more about microbial activity in relation to the heat and chemicals found inside the chimneys. This particular structure was retrieved from the seafloor while it was actively venting fluids up to 570° F. and was cut in half this fall on the UWs pier.
