Three campuses enroll nearly 28,000 undergraduates

Combined enrollment at the UW’s three campuses reached 37,656 this quarter with the Seattle campus enrolling 35,108, Tacoma, 1,335 and Bothell, 1,213.

The Seattle enrollment figures include 1,013 students in the Evening Degree Program, 25,273 undergraduates and 9,835 graduate or professional students.

New freshmen, those entering the UW directly from high school, total 4,219— down as planned from 4,505 a year ago. The average grade point for the new class is 3.65, which compares to 3.60 in 1997, and the average Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) score is 1155, an increase from 1148. The average Admission Index for the class, which is derived from a formula that combines grade-point averages and SAT scores, weighting them at 75 percent and 25 percent, respectively, rose from 72 last year to 74.

New transfer students to the Seattle campus from community and baccalaureate colleges number 1,997. State residents make up 82.4 percent of the student body, with 28,933 Washingtonians. There are 1,931 international students enrolled, constituting 5.5 percent of the total student population. Of the 25,273 undergraduates, 22,608, or 89.5 percent, are Washington residents.

Over half of the Seattle students are women, numbering 17,986 or 51.2 percent. Minority students total 9,451 or 26.9 percent of the enrollment. The University’s Seattle campus record enrollment was 37,547, set in 1979.

Enrollments at the Bothell and Tacoma campuses total 2,548, with 1,335 students enrolled at Tacoma and 1,213 enrolled at Bothell. Both campuses enroll upper division undergraduate and graduate students.

Women account for more than half of the students at both campuses, with 71.2 percent, or 951 students at Tacoma and 57.5 percent, or 697 students, at Bothell. Most students enrolled at the Bothell campus (63.4 percent) are from King County, while 27.7 percent are from Snohomish County. The remaining students are from other areas.

Over 60 percent of the Tacoma campus students (60.1 percent) are from Pierce County, 17.8 percent from King County, 8.1 percent from Kitsap County and 6.7 percent from Thurston County. The remaining students are from other areas. ¶
