The new bench east of Gerberding Hall is an example of the work by retired carpenter lead Gary Cole for which he received a Recycling Angel Award. Cole, who worked in Physical Plant’s Maintenance and Alterations Division for over 32 years, was concerned about the effect overuse of trees had on forests and the environment. As a result he began purchasing construction materials made from reclaimed paper, plastic, and wood waste and incorporating them into designs for products made in the carpentry shop. The bench is made of recycled material.

SPARX stands for Student Providers Aspiring to Rural and Underserved Experiences. The Northwest salmon motif, with accessories representing each health sciences discipline, was designed by Michele Savelle of the Health Sciences Center for Educational Resources. Posters are in color. For more information on the program, send e-mail to sparx@u.washington.edu
