Douglas Harryman II named to professorship

Dr. Douglas T. Harryman II, associate professor of orthopaedics, has been named the first holder of the E. A. Codman/DePuy Orthopaedics Professorship in Shoulder Research.

Harryman is internationally recognized for his research to determine the effectiveness of surgery in restoring comfort and function to patients with shoulder and elbow problems.

The professorship was endowed by gifts from donors and from DePuy Inc., a Warsaw, Ind., company that makes products to reconstruct damaged or diseased joints, repair bone fractures and correct spinal injuries. Ernest A. Codman is credited with introducing the concept of outcomes measurement in medicine.

Harryman received an M.D. degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and did his orthopaedic residency at West Virginia University Medical Center. He joined the UW faculty in 1989. ¶
