UWPD earns re-accreditation for second time in 10 years
The UW Police Department has attained re-accreditation for the second time in 10 years. It is now the only law enforcement agency in the state to be accredited in three consecutive assessments.
Accreditation is sponsored through the Washington State Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs and includes 210 mandatory standards, consisting of 448 separate parts. An on-site team, consisting of command personnel from police departments in the region, looked for proof that the department was meeting the standards and interviewed rank-and-file members of the department to determine if they have been trained and are following the objective provisions of the standards. The team also made random contacts with community members to determine their perceptions of the department.
Re-accreditation reflects highly on the departments professional ability to deliver quality police service to the community, said Roger Serra, chief of the UWPD. When measured against an established set of standards, the UWPD is recognized as an agency committed to providing services of the highest quality. It reflects well on the successful partnership between the department and the UW community in maintaining a safe and secure environment for its citizens. ¶
