King named assistant v-p for capital projects
Weldon Ihrig, executive vice president, has appointed Frederick W. King assistant vice president for capital projects for 18 months, effective Jan. 15
King has served since 1990 as assistant director for engineering and architectural services in the state Department of General Administration.
The appointment was made, Ihrig explained, after the top candidate selected from a nationwide search accepted the position, then withdrew his acceptance at the last minute. We are fortunate that someone with Fred Kings background and experience was available to fill this position in the short term, to meet a critical need at the University.
As head of the state division of engineering and architectural services, King was responsible for planning, design and construction of capital projects for most state agencies. In 1997, the division was responsible for 600 projects valued at $750 million. Among its many responsibilities, the division has oversight for construction of the permanent campus for UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College, which will be co-located on the site of the former Truly Farm.
King has a bachelors degree in architecture from the UW (1961) and also had three years of graduate course work in urban planning at the UW (1961-64), at which time he also was employed as a project manager in the UW Architects Office.
The assistant vice president for capital projects leads a team of more than 80 professionals who are involved with more than 700 alteration, renovation and new constructions projects, with a combined construction value of over $750 million. The Capital Projects Office is responsible for maintaining the architectural integrity and high quality of construction in all buildings at the UW.
Ihrig also announced that he is appointing a search committee for the new position of assistant vice president for human resources. The members are: Marc Lindenberg, dean of the Graduate School of Public Affairs, chair; Mary Ann Bill, human resources representative, staff personnel; Charles Chamberlin, deputy director of libraries; John Coulter, executive director of health sciences administration; Liz Mason, program coordinator, risk management; Jerri McCray, assistant vice president for facilities services; Ernest Morris, vice president for student affairs; and Thaddeus Spratlen, professor of marketing and international business. ¶
