President names committee for long-range diversity plan

An Advisory Committee on Diversity composed of faculty, staff and students was appointed by President Richard L. McCormick this week and charged with re-imagining “the work of maintaining and extending diversity at the University of Washington” and advising the president and the campus community on how to do that.

The committee will focus on long-range planning and policies.

The appointment of the committee is just one of several initiatives the UW is taking to maintain and increase diversity on campus in the wake of Initiative 200, which bans the use of race and sex as a preference in Washington state.

  • A I-200 Working Group, led by Vice President for Student Affairs Ernest R. Morris and Vice President for Minority Affairs Myron Apilado, deals with immediate questions on complying with the law and offers campus units guidance on handling admissions, scholarships, and other issues as they arise. Specific questions on compliance with I-200 should be addressed to Assistant Provost for Equal Opportunity Helen Remick at 543-2624. The working group developed the UW’s diversity operating principles that were adopted by the President’s Cabinet on Dec. 15.
  • The Board of Deans and other administrators met yesterday to consider draft interim policies on UW employment, faculty, staff and student matters, which were developed by the I-200 Working Group. The draft interim policies are being shared widely for review and comment.
  • A campus-wide meeting on diversity will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9 in 120 Kane Hall with introductory remarks by President McCormick followed by questions from the audience. Comments on the draft interim policies should be directed to the I-200 Working Group through Remick. ¶
