Pacific Tower sections of UW Medical Center will be renovated
A $35 million project to renovate portions of the Pacific Tower, one of the oldest portions of UW Medical Center, is scheduled to begin this summer.
The architect for the project is the firm of Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz. Baugh Construction was selected as the general contractor and construction manager.
The project includes:
Obstetrical Service/Labor and Delivery: This project calls for the remodeling of 6-South, 5-South and parts of 6-East and 5-North to respond to the changes in obstetrical care, including shortened length of stay, increased involvement of the family and a desire for a less institutional setting, while maintaining UWMC’s commitment to care of women with high risk pregnancies.
Gene Therapy Core Facility: The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $700,000 grant to the UW School of Medicine for the development and construction of a Gene Therapy Core Facility.
The new facility will accommodate scientists who are developing gene-based cures and their delivery systems. It will be located in approximately 2,600 square feet adjoining the Clinical Research Center on 7-South, which will also undergo upgrading.
Rehabilitation Medicine: This project will remodel 8-East to provide updated physical, occupational and speech therapy space for the Rehab program.
Neurology/Rehabilitation Clinic: This project will remodel 8-South to house a multi-disciplinary outpatient clinic for Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurology.
Infrastructure Upgrade: New air handling systems (including air conditioning) will be added to floors 5 through 8 in the SS wing, and floors 6 through 8 in the EE wings. There will be electrical upgrades as well, and all windows on floors 4 through 8 of the Pacific Tower will be replaced with double-pane units.
Other projects that are soon to commence or are currently under way include:
Diabetes Care Center/Psychiatry Remodel: This project will relocate the Diabetes Care Center from 7-South to 7-East in order to allow construction of the Gene Therapy Core facility. The move requires reconfiguration of the Psychiatry space on 7-East, and is scheduled to be completed in July.
The Pacific Tower elevator upgrade has been under way for some time, and is scheduled to be complete the end of July. ¶
