weather
A very wet winter isn’t getting these UW students down. On the way to class are, from left, Jacques Corriveau, Megan Aemmer, and Ryan Poliuka. According to weather data on the Atmospheric Sciences department’s Web site, rain is expected to continue through the weekend with temperatures between 50 and 38 degrees Celsius. The National Weather Service office in Seattle reported that December-January was the seventh wettest period in the past 51 years and November-December was the wettest period on record. Winds also have been above average this winter. Normally winds average 5 mph, but this winter they have averaged 8 to 18 mph. More weather information is available through the Atmospheric Sciences Web site: http://www.atmos.washington.edu/data/weather.html.

Drains
Personnel in Physical Plant just completed the arduous task of labeling all 250 storm drains on campus that empty into Lake Washington. Their effort is part of a cooperative program with the city of Seattle to make people more aware that dumping the wrong material into the drains can be extremely detrimental to the ecosystem of Lake Washington. Because the UW Seattle campus is so close to the lake most of its storm drains empty into it. The drains should not be used to dispose of anything other than runoff from the rain. Jon C. Hooper, senior suprervisor for Physical Plant Maintenance and Alterations, said the stenciling project was part of the UW’s effort to be proactive in protecting the ecosystem of the lake.
