UIF-2 preproposals advance to final round

Ten University Initiatives Fund (UIF) preproposals have been selected for submission as full proposals in the second round of UIF funding. Out of 40 preproposals submitted from schools, colleges, and administrative offices across the University, seven academic initiatives and three administrative initiatives will be considered for funding. Full proposals are due April 30, and UIF2 awards will be announced by President Richard L. McCormick and Provost Lee L. Huntsman in June.

The UIF was established by President McCormick in 1996 to allow the University to invest in transformative, cutting-edge initiatives through internal reallocation. A 1-percent assessment on all UW operating budgets supports the UIF each biennium. This biennium’s competition is split into two rounds: multidisciplinary initiatives are being considered in 1998-1999; unit-specific initiatives will be considered in 1999-2000. The 10 preproposals listed below were selected by Provost Huntsman and the UIF advisory committee for their potential to meet the UIF challenge: to move the University forward in areas of comparative advantage that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. The abstracts of these preproposals are available on the UIF Web site at http://www.washington.edu/uif/ or under “Strategies and Initiatives” from the UW homepage.

UIF-2 preproposals invited to submit full proposals are:
