The Association for Women in Science
The Seattle area chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) will present Lili Cheng of Microsoft, “Virtual Worlds: Social Interactions in Cyberspace on 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 15 at the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center Auditorium, 2725 Montlake Blvd. East, Seattle (entrance is on East Hamlin Street; parking is free and is located behind the building). There will be a reception from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the same location. Come meet the speaker.

Cheng is a lead program manager in the Microsoft Research’s Virtual Worlds Group where the research focus is on social interaction. This talk will cover recent projects by the group that demonstrate how people will use the computer to connect to one another in new and compelling ways.

Toastmasters Harborview
Harborview Toastmasters Club meets from noon-1 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in Dining Room B, Harborview. Visitors and guests are welcome. Call Pam Love, 285-1409.

Al Anon
AlAnon Open Meeting for friends and families of alcoholics, 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays in 217 Loew.

Classes

Your Path to a Healthy Body Weight, a series of eight weight management classes sponsored by the UWMC-Roosevelt and the Nutrition Clinic, will begin this month. The course is $50. Classes for employees and non-employees will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting April 20, and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays, starting April 21. To register, contact the Family Medicine Clinic at 206-598-4055. Classes for UW employees only will be held at the Plaza Café conference rooms at the UWMC from noon until 1 p.m. on Thursdays, starting April 22. Environmental Health and Safety
Environmental Health and Safety will offer the following free safety classes to University personnel. Pre-registration is required. Call 543-7201 to register, for departmental training, or to be added to the mailing list.

  • Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control: 1:30 p.m., April 5, T-473 HSC.
  • Managing Laboratory Chemicals and Spill Clean-up: 1:30 p.m., April 6, RR-134 HSC.
  • Fall Protection: 9:30 a.m., April 8, 268 Marine Studies. (required for any employee working where there is a fall hazard greater than 10 feet)
  • Office Ergonomics/Work Station Design: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., April 14, 301B Hall Health.
  • Fire Extinguisher Training: 1:30 p.m., April 15, 106 Fisheries. (hands-on training)
  • Harborview Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control: 9 a.m., April 15, Personnel Conference Room 16. (This is the only BBP training/refresher offered at Harborview this quarter.)
  • Hazard Communication Train-the-Trainer: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., April 22, 301A Hall Health.
  • Earthquake/Disaster Preparedness: 1:30 p.m., April 22, 301A Hall Health.
  • Compressed Gas Safety: 1:30 p.m., April 27, 301A Hall Health.

    For Sale: Mac SE and Mac Classic Computers are now on sale for $150 each in the Center for Career Services. Need a small spare machine for word processing or data collection?     Married Couples Sought
    The Family Formation Project at the University of Washington is seeking an ethnically diverse sample of married couples to participate in our study of communication and health. We are recruiting couples where at least one person is Asian or Pacific Islander. Married couples have the potential to earn up to $200.
