Graduate Research Awards In Nanotechnology
The Center for Nanotechnology is making a call for application in its campus-wide competition for Graduate Student Research in Nano-technology, which will be awarded for twelve months starting Summer Quarter 1999. Graduate students from all departments are eligible if they are beyond their first full year in graduate school on the award starting date. Current 1st year awardees may reapply if they wish continued funding after June 15, 1999. Students already holding a 2nd-year extension award may not reapply since only two-year program participation is allowed. Successful applicants will receive notification of the award by May 24. Funding will begin on June 16, 1999.

University Reference Stations now contain the following new and revised information:
Operations Manual
The following information is new:
“Policy and Procedures for Domestic Violence in the Workplace Awareness” (D 11.7)—This new procedure provides policies and guidelines concerning the impact of domestic violence in the workplace. Specific sets of procedures are provided for addressing various concerns, including: the employee who is a victim of domestic violence; the employee who is a perpetrator of domestic violence; employees who are concerned for coworkers; managers and supervisors; and human resources professionals.
“Fee Increases Subject to Initiative 601 Limitations” (D 33.3)—Initiative 601, passed by the voters of Washington State in 1993, outlines those University fees which are subject to the limitations of the initiative as well as indicating those fees which are not subject to these limitations. Additionally, this procedure addresses how Initiative601 may affect new University fees as they are developed.
The Operations Manual is revised in the following areas:
“Professional Staff Program” (D 42.1)—This material was revised to reflect revisions to the section on salary administration, including retention and recognition adjustments, as well as various housekeeping changes.
“Student Employee Pay Schedule and Classification Guidelines” (D 44.1)—This procedure provides new hourly pay ranges for student employees, effective January 1, 1999.
“University Employment of Minors” (D 44.3)—Updates the minimum hourly rate for minors (ages 14-17 years) employed at the University, as well as information on work hours allowed and prohibited duties, as subject to state and federal laws.
“University-Wide Organization List” (C 00.1) and “University Organization Chart” (C 00.2)—Both of these sections have received partial updates detailing personnel and functions listed for the offices of the Board of Regents, the Executive Vice President, and the Vice Provosts. Complete revisions to these sections are handled annually.
“Description of the Reference Station System” (D 00.5)—This change includes updated website addresses for locating Reference Station materials online and updated descriptions of various Reference Station items.
“Exception to the Maximum Lodging Amount” (D 76.3)—This revision reflects updated information for submitting TEVs when requesting exceptions to the maximum allowable lodging amount under specific conditions. Examples of completed TEVs are included.
“Graduate School Memoranda” (D 20.2)—This update provides the website address for this numbered memoranda series distributed by the Graduate School.
“Rates for Meals and Lodging in the Continental USA” (D 76.2 A)—Updated per diem rates for standard and high-cost locations within the continental USA, effective February 1, 1999.
“Mileage Reimbursement Rates” (D 75.1 A)—This revision reflects new mileage rates, effective April 1, 1999.
“Current Contract Airfares” (D 75.2 A)—These airfare rates are effective January 1, 1999, for those airlines which have contracted with the state of Washington.
“Rate Schedule for Work Performed in the University Temporary Services Office” (D 50.1 A) and “Departmental Charges for On-Site Temporary Services” (D 50.2 A)—These attachments provide updated information on charges for services supplied through the University Temporary Services Office.
“Motor Pool Rental Schedule” (D 53.2 A)—An updated listing of vehicles and their rates available through the Motor Pool, effective November 1, 1998.
Various other “housekeeping” changes.
Washington Administrative Code manual
The campus binders have received a complete revision to Title 251 WAC, the rules which currently govern WPRB-classified staff. The January 1999 update covers all 19 chapters.
Additionally, one chapter was repealed from Title 478 WAC concerning redundant rules for the Burke Museum, and the old, outdated 1992 version of the Handbook for Classified Staff was also removed from the binders.

Family Educational Rights & Privacy
Instructors are reminded that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 requires that the University treat student records in a confidential manner. Student records include examinations and papers submitted by students. Faculty who plan on distributing grades, papers, and exams through departmental mailboxes or in hallways or plan to post grades on a Web site must first have the permission of their students or be prepared to distribute such papers in ways that safeguard the students’ personal information.
