TAKING THE CASE: The University of Washington won 14 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awards in the recent district competition. John Marmor, assistant editor of Columns magazine, won a bronze in feature writing; Marmor, Columns editor Tom Griffin and Sandra Hines, assistant director of News and Information, won a bronze for periodical team writing; and in a series of individual and team projects, senior publications designers Jo-Ann Sire, John Linse and Dean Driskell won one grand gold, one gold, four silver, and six bronze award. SAY WATT? Last year, was a golden one for the UW Tailored Agreementan energy conservation effort between the University and Seattle City Lightreports Javad Maadanian, SCL senior engineer overseeing the project. The UW staff completed 61 lighting and HVAC projects for a total estimated savings of 11,400,820 kWh with Seattle City Light pitching in about $1.3 million in incentive funding. Maadanian said this mark went beyond expectation and was the result of facilities services management support, staff dedication to getting the work done and teamwork between the UW and City Light. KUDOS: Principal Physicist Eric Thorsos, Applied Physics Lab, won the National Defense Industrial Association Undersea Warfare Divisions Bronze Medal Award for his contributions to improved performance of underwater acoustic systems through a more complete understanding of the acoustic environment Roger Roffman, professor of social work, and his social work colleagues, research associate professor Rosemary Ryan and Blair Beadnell, research scientist, will receive the 1999 Society for Social Work and Research Award for Excellence in Research. The three wrote a paper on HIV-prevention group counseling delivered by telephone: An efficacy trial with gay and bisexual men in AIDS and Behavior.
