Mr. Salmon was a big hit at the annual release of salmon at UW fish pond Tuesday. Students from 35 public and private schools were on campus to learn about salmon from UW undergraduates and to release salmon they raised in their classrooms using eggs provided by the UW last fall. Also on hand were Seattle Mayor Paul Schell and Arthur Nowell, dean of the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences. The project is a cooperative effort between the UW and the Seattle Public Utilities department.

Two Mount Vernon American holly trees from Virginia are now taking root along George Washington Lane near Parrington Hall thanks to a gift from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The Washington State Society and Cascade (Bellevue) Chapter members planted the trees to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washingtons death. This variety of holly tree is one of the oldest trees surviving from revolutionary times. Participating in the planting are, from left, Norman G. Arkans, Special Assistant to the President, Associate Vice President and Executive Director of University Relations; Dean David B. Thorud, College of Forest Resources; Karen Parsons, State Librarian, Washington State Society, DAR; Joan Brown, Regent, Cascade Chapter DAR; and Marjorie Palmer Passler, Historic Tree Coordinator, Cascade Chapter DAR.

When Campus-Community Partnerships for Health held its national conference in Seattle at the end of March, many of the participants went on site visits to UW-related community programs. One of those was the U District-University Partnership for Youth, coordinated by Nancy Amidei of the School of Social Work. When the group visited the U District Youth Center, above, Nyla Fritz, employment counselor, explained how the program works. Photo by Gavin Sisk.
