UW civil engineering design students won a spot in the June national concrete canoe competition with their 105-pound entry. The team, above, waits its turn to run float tests on its entry in the regionals. They not only won race competitions, but also took first place in best design report, best oral presentation, best display and best final product. The competition has been a boon for endowing the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineerings Centennial Fund, which was launched last fall to mark the departments 100-year anniversary. So far, $100,000 of the $250,000 goal has been raised. The endowment will be used for student projects, including competitions undergraduate research fellowships and instructional innovation.
