AWARD-WINNING RESEARCH: Professor of Psychology Marsha Linehan has spent the first part of 1999 earning assorted award and honors for her studies on suicide. She’s won the Louis J. Dublin Award for lifetime achievement in the field of suicide from the American Association of Suicidology, the Senior Scientist Award from the National Institutes of Mental Health, and the Distinguished Researcher in Suicide from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. She’s also been named by the Rodd D. Brickell Foundation as this year’s visiting professor on suicide at Columbia University.

UWTV: For the second year, UWTV has won the 1999 Award of Excellence in the Best of the Northwest Video Festival, Overall Excellence in Programming. The entry videotape included a sample of UW-produced programs from Neurosurgery Grand Rounds: What’s new in the treatment of strokes? to Language is the Key: Talking and books and Entrepreneurs and Innovators: Women entrepreneurs. Judging is based on diversity of programming, impact on community and effective use of medium. Entries were received from Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, British Columbia and Alberta.

Professor of English John Coldeway was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for 1999-2000. The project Performing the Past: Renegotiating Early English Drama, will trace the decorations on early English drama manuscripts as aids to reading and performing the texts they containThe National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Climate, Ecosystems, Infectious Disease, and Human Health appointed as one of its members Jonathan Mayer, professor of geography medicine (infectious diseases), family medicine, and health services. The group’s charge over the next two years is to evaluate the evidence concerning the interconnections between climate, environment and infectious diseases The American Geophysical Union has elected Mark Ghiorso a Fellow for 1999 Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society has won the annual award for best journal design from The Council of Editors of Learned Journals. The journal was honored for the complete redesign undertaken by its editors: UW professors Carolyn Allen and Judith Howard. This is the first international design award in Signs’ 23-year history. ¶
