The Cancer Care Alliance will hold a facilities open house from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 21, in Plaza Cafe, room A, at UW Medical Center. The event will provide an opportunity for faculty and staff to stop by and see plans for the various CCA facility renovations and construction projects now under way. The Alliance is a combined project of the UW, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Childrens Hospital and Regional Medical Center. Exploring the Outdoors Without Pain, is the topic for the Healthy-U talk from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, May 17, at the REI store in downtown Seattle. Dr. Justin Osborn, clinic chief at the UW Physicians neighborhood clinic in Factoria, will offer guidelines on warming up, how to pack and wear backpacks, and how to prevent injuries. Diets, Supplements and Current Issues in Sports Nutrition is the title for a UW-organized satellite meeting on June 1 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Seattle the first week of June. The satellite program, scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel, is co-chaired by Dr. Adam Drewnowski, director of the UW Nutritional Sciences Interdisciplinary Graduate Program, and Dr. Edward Lipkin, associate professor of medicine. Several other UW faculty members will make presentations. Registration fees range from $150 to $50, with a special rate for students. For registration information, call 543-1730. Advisory board seeks members: Harborview Mental Health Services Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) is seeking new members to be part of the planning process for future activities of the CAB to support mental-health outpatients in the community. Potential members should have an interest in mental-health issues and be willing to attend quarterly meetings, as well as spend time outside of meetings in support of patient-centered activities in the community. Female sexuality questionnaire: Women from 21 to 70 who are in stable heterosexual relationships but have sexual problems may be eligible to participate in a brief, confidential questionnaire study at the UW. The study is being done to validate the usefulness of the questionnaire. Participants will spend an hour to 90 minuites filling out questionnaires and will be paid $20. Call 543-2001 for more information. Estrogen and sleep: UW researchers are seeking women between 55 and 80 for a study of the effects of estrogen on sleep, temperature and memory. Participants must be non-smoking, five years or more past menopause and not currently taking estrogen. Participants will take a low-dose estrogen pill or a placebo pill (inactive substance) once a day for six months. The study also involves two 72-hour stays at the UW Medical Center. Compensation is $300 at the end of the study.
