Springtime and the learnin’ isn’t so easy—especially when the sun is out. Martha Kingsbury, professor of art history, takes her lecture in Women in Art outdoors to enjoy a little of the warmth.

King of Sweden taps UW professor for one-year academic post
Robert Charlson, a UW professor emeritus in atmospheric sciences and chemistry, has been awarded the King Carl XVI Gustav Guest Professorship in Environmental Sciences at Stockholm University. Charlson received a handwritten invitation from the Swedish king and formally accepted in April. The position, which covers the academic year 1999-2000, is based in Stockholm University’s meteorology department, where Charlson will participate in an interdisciplinary course on the science of global climate change and biogeochemical cycles. He is widely known for his research in the chemistry and physics of atmospheric aerosols. His experimental and theoretical work have contributed to significant advances in understanding how air pollution helps form acid rain and how it also leads to the formation of particles that actually cool the global climate. Scientists believe that cooling may have regionally masked a large share of global warming from man-made greenhouse gases. Charlson received an honorary doctorate from the Natural Sciences faculty at Stockholm University in 1993. He prefers to call himself a “senior” professor because he believes the term “emeritus” suggests he has stopped working.
