Skin cancer screening: UW Medical Center will hold free screenings to help detect potential skin cancer from 8 a.m. to noon, Friday, June 11, in the Dermatology Center. The 15-minute screenings will include preventive information and are available by appointment. To make an appointment, call 598-4067 weekdays. Keeping Those Shoulders in Shape: How to Prevent and Recover from Shoulder Injuries is a free talk to be given from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, June 21, at the REI main store, 222 Yale Ave. N., Seattle. Dr. Kevin Smith of the Bone and Joint Center at UW Medical Center-Roosevelt will talk about training to strengthen muscles and how to spot and avoid injuries. Whether you paddle a canoe or kayak, play softball or hoe the garden, the advice will help you maintain healthy and pain-free shoulders. Smith will also discuss options for rehabilitating existing shoulder injuries, old or recent. The Healthy-U health and fitness talks at REI are sponsored by UW Physicians on the third Monday of each month. No registration is necessary. Dr. Wayne Katon, professor and vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, received the 1999 Senior Scholar Health Services Research Award from the American Psychiatric Association at its annual meeting May 19 in Washington, D.C. Katon was honored for his contributions to health services research. He is an expert on the prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders in primary care, and on the relationship of psychiatric disorder to medically unexplained symptoms.
