Dr. Rheba de Tornyay, dean emeritus of the School of Nursing, has been named to the Harborview Medical Center Board of Trustees. A former member of the Pew Commission on health professions education, she currently serves on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Board of Trustees, is a member of the University House Retirement Community Advisory Committee and is vice president of the UW Retirement Association. She was appointed to the Harborview Board by Cynthia Sullivan of the King County Council.

The American Red Cross is recruiting volunteers for a region-wide disaster drill on Thursday, August 26. Both UW Medical Center and Harborview will be participating in the drill. Volunteers will play the part of either airline crash victims or grieving family members and will begin the day with a make-up session at 6 a.m. The location will be Sea-Tac Airport. Dr. Frances Lewis, Elizabeth Sterling Soule professor of nursing and health promotion in the School of Nursing, has received the Oncology Nursing Foundation/Amgen Inc. Research Grant for 1999. The $10,000 grant will support research on “Quality of Life and Adjustment for Couples Experiencing Advanced Breast Cancer.” Lewis has done extensive work on the effects of cancer, particularly breast cancer, on the lives of families.

People with gum disease sought: People age 21 and older who think, or have been told, that they have periodontal disease may be able to participate in a UW School of Dentistry study of methods to diagnose and estimate risk for future gum disease. Participants will receive a free dental examination, including full-mouth X-rays. Participants will receive copies of their X-rays, written comments about their oral health, and free parking or bus fare for each of two visits to the Regional Clinical Dental Research Center at the School of Dentistry. Participants who qualify for the study will also receive $100 at the end of the second visit. For more information, call (206) 685-8132. ¶
