Dentistry Research Day 1999 set for Sept. 23

People can learn more about the latest research at the UW School of Dentistry during Research Day 1999, on Thursday, Sept. 23. It takes place in room T-435 and the Health Sciences Lobby at the Health Sciences Center.

This year’s theme for research presentations is “Inter-relationships between Oral Health and Systemic Health.”

The keynote speaker, talking about “Changing Oral Disease Patterns,” will be Dr. John Greenspan of the University of California, San Francisco. He is a professor of oral biology and oral pathology, chairman of the Department of Stomatology and director of the Oral AIDS Center.

Greenspan has published nearly 300 papers and four books on oral aspects of AIDS, oral pathology and immunopathology. He and his colleagues have made major contributions to HIV research and care, notably the discovery of the lesion called hairy leukoplakia, its association with Epstein-Barr Virus, and the significance of this and other oral lesions in the progression of HIV diseases.

The event begins at 8:15 a.m. outside T-435, where research presentations will be made from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will be a display of posters from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Health Sciences Lobby.
