Health and Safety Committees call for nominations

Part of the University of Washington’s commitment to employee health and safety is the annual election of organizational health and safety committees, which are designed to ensure health and safety issues/concerns get the attention they deserve. Nominations to health and safety committees are now being accepted. Elections are scheduled for November.

The committees are charged to:

  • review and evaluate health and safety inspection reports;
  • review and evaluate accident investigation reports;
  • review and evaluate accident and illness prevention programs; and
  • provide a forum for employee concerns about health and safety.

    Organizational committees include elected and appointed members and work at the unit level to advise deans, vice presidents and other administrative heads. The university-wide committee, which provides campus-wide consistency and oversight, is composed of elected and appointed representatives from the organizational committees.

    Faculty, staff, research or teaching assistants, hourly, temporary or student employees are eligible for committee membership. To make sure the nominee is willing to serve, you must have his/her approval before submitting his/her name. Time commitments vary, but generally members spend at least two hours a month on committee business and four to eight hours a year for orientation and training. The term is for two years as per WAC 296-24-045(1)(a). Individuals may serve unlimited terms, so current committee members are eligible for re-election.

    For health and safety matters, the UW is divided into 11 organizational units. Facilities Services, Publications Services, Student Affairs, the College of Architecture, Bothell Campus, Tacoma Campus and the College of Forest Resources have their own elections.

    Nomination Process
    You can nominate your representative for your employee unit in two ways: Either from the EH&S Web site, http://www.ehs.washington.edu, where you can view the organizational structures to determine the group you belong to and then access and submit the nomination form, or by calling 543-7388 to request a nomination form.

    Nominations must be submitted/mailed before Oct. 29.

    A ballot containing the nominees’ names will be sent out in November. ¶
