Tom Wadsworth of Olympia and Kai Chamberlain of Multnoma, Ore., mark a tiny stickleback during class exercises about ways to estimate how many fish of a certain species are found in a waterway. They were among half-a-dozen University of Washington undergraduates who recently completed a six-week course at two UW salmon research stations in Alaska. The stations provide fisheries managers and industry with data about size of salmon populations and provide scientists with information about basic salmon biology. The students were part of the first undergraduate class offered by the UW School of Fisheries in Alaska. They worked alongside UW faculty and graduate students and helped build on a 50-year record of salmon research. The class was organized and taught by Ray Hilborn and Tom Quinn, both fisheries professors, and Dan Schindler, assistant professor of zoology. It was supported financially by the Tools for Transformation fund.
