Dr. Sue T. Hegyvary, former dean of the School of Nursing, has been named editor of IMAGE: Journal of Nursing Scholarship. The journal is published by Sigma Theta Tau International, the nursing honor society. "My hope is to emphasize scholarship and excellence in professional nursing," Hegyvary said. "The direction of the society and the journal are consistent with my strong commitment to scholarship and international nursing." Hegyvary, a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, was dean of nursing from 1986 to 1998. She is a professor of biobehavioral nursing and health systems. Dr. Ernest Weymuller, Jr., professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, has become president-elect of the American Head and Neck Society. The new organization was formed last year when the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons and the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery merged. In July, the society will sponsor the Fifth International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer, which will be held in SanFrancisco. Weymuller will deliver the keynote address on outcomes research in head and neck cancer. Online News the weekly electronic news service for faculty members of the UW School of Medicine received an Award of Distinction in Medical Education Public Affairs from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The award was presented last month at the AAMC's annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Dr. John Coombs, associate vice president for medical affairs and associate dean for regional affairs and rural health, established Online News in 1997 as a way to connect the medical school's UW-based and geographically dispersed faculty by providing regular news updates from Seattle and around the region. A review board, including all the associate deans, oversees the news service, which is produced in Health Sciences and Medical Affairs News and Community Relations by Leila Gray and Will Morton. Frontage Road parking: The parking system on Frontage Road, the semi-circular drive directly in front of the UW Medical Center entrance, has changed. Instead of the meters and load-and-unload spaces, all the parking spots are now pay-by-space for 30-minute parking. Drivers pay 50 cents at a machine under the central canopy. Parking in this area is intended for short-term use only. Drivers with state disability cards also need to pay at the machine for short-term parking or go to the parking gatehouse for longer-term parking. ¶ University Week The faculty and staff publication of the University of Washington uweek@u.washington.edu November 4, 1999
