Senegal presidential candidate seeks U.S. youth exchange

Sheikh Abdoulaye Dieye of Senegal, a presidential candidate and Sufi religious leader, will visit the University of Washington Seattle and Tacoma campuses Nov. 15-16.

He will speak on "Spiritual Politics in Senegal" at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in 205 Smith. The following day he will discuss "Politics and Community Development in Senegal" at 2 p.m., in 104 BHS, UW Tacoma. The lecture will be preceded by a reception in 320 GWP at noon.

Both lectures will be given in French with English translation by his assistant, Fara Gaye.

Dieye is an elected member of Senegal's parliament, the deputy mayor of his town, St. Louis, and a candidate for the presidency. The central theme of his candidacy stipulates increasing development in Senegal by first developing its people through expanded educational opportunities and international cultural and educational exchange. His proposed youth project will also offer inner-city African American youth a chance to learn traditional African spiritual values in Senegal.

Dieye is a city planner and landscape architect and Sufi master of Khidmatul Khadim.
