NW Climate
Impacts of climate variation on the Northwest are illustrated in this figure. The top panel shows how conditions over the North Pacific (specifically changes in sea surface temperature) lead to slightly warmer, drier weather with less snow, less water in the rivers, less abundant salmon, and more difficulties for trees. The bottom panel shows how the opposite changes in sea surface temperature have the opposite effects.

Bookstore
The atmosphere at the University Book Storewas a little more sedate in the 1930s than it is today as this photo illustrates. The store, established by University of Washington students in 1900, is celebrating its first 100 years with readings by 100 authors in 100 days. The Distinguished Author Readings, which begin Friday, Nov. 19 with Gore Vidal, are a benefit for the Stanford Book Fund. A schedule of events is available from the store¹s Web site: http://www.ubookstore.com. The store, which now has nine branches, began in a cloak room next to the UW president¹s office in Denny Hall, the result of two enterprising students. It is now operated as a trust, with students, faculty and staff as the beneficiaries. Money not needed for store operations is returned to beneficiaries each October. More than $1.2 million has been returned since the trust began; the current rate of return is 10 percent.
