The UW Board of Regents of Regents has canceled its meeting for Friday,
Dec. 10. The next regular public meeting of the Board of Regents is at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan 21, in the Walker-Ames Room of Kane Hall.

Academic Opportunity

Project Assistant/Graduate Research Assistantship*
We are seeking a graduate student to assist in the implementation of a component of the Rural Girls in Science Program administered through the Northwest Center for Research on Women. The student will assist project leaders in the coordination of site visits to rural schools in eastern Washington, aimed at promoting college opportunities for rural youth. The assistant will also help with evaluation tasks associated with the project, coordination with presenters and hosts, administration, and some writing.

Ideal candidate will be a graduate student with a demonstrated interest in issues relating to the educational processes of rural and/or minority youth; some knowledge of the practice and theory of science education; experience with event management/marketing; strong writing, communication and organizational skills; proficiency with Spanish and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.

Program Assistant
The Rural Girls in Science Program is seeking an assistant who will focus on grant writing and fund raising for ongoing activities of the program as well as activities related to writing and research about the project’s outcomes. The assistant will work with the director and other staff members to rewrite an existing proposal to the National Science Foundation, and identify and apply to other sources of funding appropriate to the goals of the project.

Ideal candidate will be a graduate student with a demonstrated interest in issues relating to the educational processes of minority youth; some knowledge of the practice and theory of science education; experience with the grant application process for both public and private sources; strong writing, communication and organizational skills and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.

Revised Motor Pool Rental Rates
The previously published rentals rates for the following vehicles have been revised. Rates for the following vehicles are $18.93 per day plus an additional 35 cents per mile:

Carry All (5 person), Minivan (7 person), 12 Passenger Van, Suburban (6-9 people), 4x4 (4 person).

These new rates were effective Nov. 1, 1999.
Motor Pool

Surplus Property
The Surplus Property program has available a large amount of surplus furniture acquired from the U.S. Department of Navy as a result of the ownership transfer of facilities at the Sand Point Naval Station. This furniture includes desks, letter and legal-sized file cabinets, glass-door cabinets and storage cabinets.

This property is located in Building 193 (the former commissary), which is at the southeast section of the Sand Point facility. It will be available for viewing Dec. 7 and 8 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact the Surplus Property warehouse staff at 685-1573 or via e-mail at surplus2@u.washington.edu.
