Stephen E. Nord memorial set

A memorial celebrating the life of Stephen E. Nord will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10 in 106B HUB. Remembrances may be made to the American Parkinson’s Association or the University’s General Scholarship Fund. Nord, retired Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, served the Unversity of Washington for 30 years. He died Tuesday, Nov. 30.

A 1952 UW graduate, Nord returned in 1961 as a principal personnel representative for the Division of Health Sciences and joined student affairs in 1966. Nord was described by colleagues as extremely perceptive and innovative in meeting student needs, skills that frequently made him the middleman between students and the administration. With few exceptions, students trusted and respected him and, while they might not have always followed his advice and guidance, they listened to him. He served as an advisor to the ASUW Board of Control for most of his career, and at the end of its term, the 1991-92 Board of Control passed a resolution recognizing and thanking Nord for his years of service. They also changed the name of the ASUW Board of Control meeting room (204M HUB) to the “The Stephen Nord Conference Room.” Nord, who retired in 1992, returned to manage the HUB and Student Activities during the long illness and subsequent death of the Director of Student Activities and Union Facilities, Kathy Niccolls.

Nord is survived by his wife, Patricia, and two sons, Jeffery and Christopher. ¶
