Nominations sought for faculty, staff

Nominations are being accepted for several University of Washington faculty and staff awards.

All UW staff are invited to nominate their outstanding co-workers for the Distinguished Staff Award (DSA) to be presented in June 2000. This honor carries a $3,000 award. All permanent staff who have been employed at least 50 percent time for the past six months are eligble, including staff at Seattle, Bothell, Tacoma, and Harborview and other off-campus sites.

Nominations should be based on the following criteria:

  • Superior sustained or special one-time contribution to the mission of the unit or the university.
  • Exceptional creativity and innovation.
  • Superior responsiveness in delivering services to the unit’s clients.
  • Clear dedication to high standards in his/her own work and in that of others.
  • Continuous contribution to a positive work environment.

Nominees do not have to meet all of these criteria but all that is pertinent should be addressed in the nomination paperwork. An expanded description of the nomination criteria and nomination forms are available on the Web at http://www.washington.edu/admin/personnel/dsaward/.

Nominations must be received by the end of the day on Friday, Feb. 11. If you do not have access to the online forms, call Peggy Frazier at 543-8723 for a hard copy.

“The Distinguished Staff Awards were established to recognize the outstanding staff who work so hard and enthusiastically to assist the faculty and students in making the UW an outstanding university,” said Weldon Ihrig, Executive Vice President. “The high quality of UW staff has been demonstrated by the exceptional staff who have been recognized by being nominated for the DSA.”

    Nominations open for teaching awards

The 2000 Distinguished Teaching Award Committee invites nominations for the new S. Sterling Munro Public Service Faculty Fellowship Award, the Distinguished Teaching Awards and the Excellence in Teaching Awards.

The Munro Award was established with a gift from the Henry M. Jackson Foundation and it recognizes faculty who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in community-partnership approaches to teaching and learning.

To nominate a UW faculty member for any of the awards, send a one-page letter to The Distinguished Teaching Awards Committee, c/o Dean Frederick L. Campbell, 340 Gerberding Hall, Box 351209 or e-mail it to dta@u.washington.edu.. Letters must include the nominee’s department, your name and your current mailing address. Self-nominations and nominations of past candidates are welcomed. Previous recipients are ineligible. Letters must be received by Friday, Jan. 14.

The Munro Public Service Faculty Fellowship includes a stipend of $3,500 and graduate assistant funding for the award year (three quarters) from the Office of Undergraduate Education.

The committee will ask for further information from finalists following a review of the nomination letters. ¶
