At the Health Sciences Center

An annual UW tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, in the lobby of the Health Sciences Center. The event is free and open to everyone.

This year’s theme is “Keeping His Dream Alive in the 21st Century.”

Welcoming remarks will be given by UW President Richard McCormick. Keynote speakers are Dr. Theresa Maresca, a physician with the Seattle Indian Health Board, and Tyson Marsh, president of the Black Student Union at the UW.

Performances include music by the Franklin High School Jazz Lab; dancing, chanting and drumming by students from the American Indian Heritage School; and music by guitarist and vocalist Richard Rice. Joe Ann Moore will lead the audience in singing “We Shall Overcome.”

A Distinguished Service Award for Community Service and Volunteerism will be given to the late Aki Kurose, Seattle school teacher and civil rights and peace activist.

Artwork by students from the UW’s Center on Human Development and Disability, Montlake Elementary School and Summit K-12 School will be on display. The event is jointly sponsored by Health Sciences Administration and UW Medical Center.
