The School of Public Health and Community Medicine welcomed Dr. Edward Penhoet, dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, to campus Feb. 7 for an evening reception and talk. He and others spoke on the topic of how the public health sciences and the biotechnology industry can work together. Penhoet is the co-founder and former president and CEO of Chiron Inc., one of the world’s largest and most successful biotech companies. Panelists for a discussion of public health and biotech included Robert W. Day, dean emeritus of the UW School of Public Health and director emeritus of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; Bruce Carter, president of ZymoGenetics; Thomas Fleming, chairman of biostatistics in the School of Public Health; Alvin Kwiram, vice provost for research, UW; and Thomas Ranken, president and CEO, Axio Corp.

Steve Milam has been named director of regulatory compliance for UW Physicians and Children’s University Medical Group. In addition, he has been named coordinator of compliance for medical affairs, reporting to Dr. Paul Ramsey, UW vice president of medical affairs. Milam recently retired from his position as senior counsel and assistant attorney general after more than 30 years of service with the Attorney General’s Office, including more than 23 years assigned to the UW. During his assignment to the University, he provided legal advice and counsel to the health sciences schools, as well as UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. In his director positions for UWP and CUMG, he will be responsible for implementing their compliance plans. As coordinator of compliance for medical affairs, he will promote integrated and compatible compliance programs, policies and procedures among all components of the UW Academic Medical Center. ¶
