University Week tabs new editoral staff

Dear Readers:

It’s time for introductions. Through an unusual set of circumstances, University Week finds itself with new people in both the editor and assistant editor positions, and we’d like you to have a chance to meet us.

  New Editors
Nancy Wick, editor, and Steve Hill, assistant editor, comprise the new editorial staff at University Week.

My name is Nancy Wick, and I became the editor on Feb. 7. If the name sounds familiar to some of you, that’s because I served as assistant editor of University Week for 14 years before leaving for another campus position in 1998. My undergraduate and master’s degrees are from the University of Missouri, and I also hold a doctorate in Speech Communication from the UW. I started my career at a newspaper in the Midwest before moving to Seattle in 1982.

My assistant editor, Steve Hill, is new to the University. A native of Lincoln, Neb., he earned his bachelor’s at the university there and his master’s from Colorado State. He worked in both media relations and at newspapers before moving to Seattle last summer. Steve came to University Week as acting assistant editor in November, then served as acting editor after the former editor left for another position. He made such an impression that we decided to keep him on as the assistant editor.

I think the combination of old-timer and newcomer on the staff is good for University Week. As we strive to produce the very best campus newspaper possible, I can provide historical context while Steve brings fresh eyes.

But Steve and I are in agreement in wanting your participation in what we do. Since we can’t be everywhere at once, we hope you’ll feel free to contact us with story ideas. Tell us when you or someone you know has earned an honor, award or had a book published. Tell us when you’re having an event of interest to others on campus. And tell us about campus people who are interesting or unusual enough to merit a profile. You can contact us by phone, 543-2580; or by e-mail, uweek@u.washington.edu.

Steve and I are committed to producing a lively, informative, and yes, even entertaining publication for the UW’s faculty and staff. We look forward to hearing from you. ¶

Sincerely,

Nancy Wick, editor
