Rainmaker One

ABOVE: Rainmaker One, the creation of a team of high school students from Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma with the aid of the UW Department of Electrical Engineering and the Seattle Robotics Society, goes for a score in preparation for an exhibition last Saturday in Bellevue. Watching from left are UW electrical engineering students Renee Pak, Brian Alexander, Ben Warrick and Bryant Esendencia, Jr.

Ecosystem
This chart illustrates the fundamental producer-decomposer co-dependency common to most ecosystems. Black boxes represent biomass (P for producers, D for decomposers) and white boxes represent material pools (organic and inorganic carbon and nutrients). Solid arrows indicate major carbon/nutrient flows and dashed arrows indicate minor flows The figure shows producers are dependent on decomposers for inorganic nutrients while decomposers are dependent on producers for organic materials.

Charlson
Robert Charlson, left, professor emeritus of atmospheric sciences and chemistry, is presented with a diploma from the king of Sweden, who honored him as the King Carl XVI Gustaf Guest Professor in Environmental Science at Stockholm University. The appointment is for the 1999-2000 academic year and is based in the university’s meteorology department, where Charlson is participating in an interdisciplinary course on the science of global climate change and biogeochemical cycles. After the presentation, Charlson gave a lecture for more than 850 honors science students from the gymnasiums in the Stockholm region.

Kids/Dentist
Learning what dentists do - A group of preschoolers from the Experimental Education Unit at the UW’s Center on Human Development and Disability toured the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic last week. Dr. Leland Shenfield, pediatric dentistry resident, caught their attention showing how he uses a mirror to examine a child’s mouth.
