Dr. Nelson Fausto, professor and chair of the School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology, is the first recipient of an award from the American Society for Investigative Pathology recognizing a distinguished record in training pathologists who go on to make substantial research contributions.

The nomination for the award, the Chugai Mentoring and Scholarship Award in Pathology, was initiated by Fausto’s former students and young colleagues at Brown University in Providence, R.I., and his current students at the UW.

The award will be presented on April 17 in San Diego at the Experimental Biology 2000 Meeting. Fausto will present a paper and chair a symposium designed to showcase the work of trainees in pathology research.

Fausto came to the UW as chair of the pathology department in 1994. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he earned his M.D. degree from the University of Sao Paulo in 1960. He completed a residency in pathology and a fellowship in cancer research at the University of Wisconsin Medical School before joining the Brown University faculty in 1975.

An internationally noted cancer researcher, Fausto studies the genetic basis of liver tumors as well as normal liver growth and regeneration.

This spring, Fausto is presenting a series of special lectures on liver regeneration, liver cancer and viral hepatitis at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, as holder of that university’s Spinoza Chair. ¶
