Muecke to present dinner lecture on AIDS in Thailand

Marjorie Muecke, professor of psychosocial and community health in the UW School of Nursing, will present one of eight dinner lectures in a series on current international trends and transitions.

Muecke, who returned to the UW this year after six years as program officer for reproductive health and population with the Ford Foundation, is considered an expert in Southeast Asian health issues and social structure.

Her major fields of interest are women and gender in lowland Thai families and societies, reproductive health including cultural interpretations of sexuality and HIV/AIDS, and adjustments of refugee women to change.

She will speak on “Disease as a Social Force: AIDS, Economics and Families in Thailand” on April 12. The dinner program, with Thai food catered by a local restaurant, begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Walker-Ames Room of Kane Hall on campus. Tickets are $22 for the dinner and lecture. Call 543-1675 or e-mail cwes@u.washington.edu for registration or more information.

The series of dinner lectures, which began in February, is sponsored by the Outreach Centers of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and the Center for International Business Education and Research at the School of Business Administration. ¶
