CASE WINNERS: The UW received 13 awards in the competition sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Region VIII. About 475 Entries came from institutions in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and all of Western Canada, producing 105 winners. From the UW, Rob Harrill, news and information, won a silver in news release writing for cellular phone rats, while Vince Stricherz, news and information, won a bronze in the same category for corpse flower. Tom Griffin and Jon Marmor, Alumni Association, won a bronze for periodical team writing in Columns. They also won a silver for magazines with a circulation of more than 20,000. Lauren Fortune, Antoinette Wills and Kathryn Hunt, development; and Dean Driskell and John Linse, publication services; won a gold in annual/biennial reports for Report to Contributors, while Fortune, Driskell, Linse and Jo-Ann Sire, publication services, won a gold in fund-raising publications and a gold in overall design for Passport to Campus. Augustus Barnett, (freelance) Chuck Luce and Mike Wark, UW-Tacoma, won a silver in overall design for Compendium and Sire and Linse won a bronze in the same category for Annual Report, College of Forest Resources. Sire and Driskell won a bronze in overall design for Discover 2000 calendar. Sire won a bronze in individual design for the Freshman Convocation Poster. Mary Levin, news and information, won a silver in individual photographs for a photo of dancers and choreographers that appeared in University Week. Fortune, Jeff Zaruba (freelance) and Driskell won a bronze for photo essays in Report to Contributors. Congratulations to all the winners. MEDIA DIALOGUE: Political Science Professor Lance Bennett joined former Clinton press secretary Mike McCurry in leading the George Washington University symposium on The Political Media Dialogue recently. Lance also delivered the Holly Bronz lecture on The Free Press and a Socially Irresponsible Media. KUDOS: Chris Boe, a security guard at the UW Medical Center, has been named employee of the year by the UW Police Department . . . Creative Writing Professor David Wagoner won a Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award for his poetry collection Traveling Light . . .
